Features Explanations and Definitions

In the table above, we’ve used some terms you may not be familiar with. Here’s some more information about them.

SEER

SEER (or seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is an efficiency measurement for your air conditioner. A SEER of 13 is the legal minimum in Canada, but it’s a good idea to buy the most efficient one you can sensibly afford. The reason is that electricity rates are not expected to drop, which means you’ll be saving more on your monthly energy bills. You can use our handy calculator to help you figure out how much you will save with a more energy efficient AC.

Not all air conditioners reach their maximum potential SEER. The design and airtightness of your air ducts, the quality of the installation and your other HVAC equipment can make a difference.

Compressor Performance

There are two factors we want to look at here: how many stages it has and whether it uses  scrolling or reciprocating technology.

In term of stages, more is better. Here they are in order from good to best:

• Single stage
• Two stage
• Variable stage

The stages are basically like gears on your car. You want your air conditioner to be able to adapt the stage to the amount of work it needs to do to cool your home. When there are multiple stages to choose from, your air conditioner can operate as efficiently as possible in lower stages, only using the higher ones for those really hot days. Because the stage is always perfectly matched to the conditions, you don’t get as much temperature variation in your home and your AC doesn’t have to work as hard playing catch up later.

In terms of scrolling compressors versus reciprocating, choose scrolling compressors. They are generally quieter, are more energy efficient, and are less likely to break down because of fewer moving parts.
