Technical Terms

In the model comparison tables above, we’ve used some terms you may not be familiar with. Here are some explanations about the advantages of them.

AFUE

AFUE stands for annual fuel utilization efficiency. It means how much heat it gives you for the amount of fuel energy it uses. For example, a furnace with an AFUE of 90% will most of its fuel into heat for your home, but 10% will be wasted.

The higher the number, the better. We don’t recommend buying a furnace with a lower AFUE than 90%, because Toronto’s winters can get very cold and it will mean you’re spending too much on gas.

Gas Burner Stages

The gas burner in your furnace is what creates the heat. There are single-stage, two-stage and variable stage burners. Variable stages are the best in terms of energy efficiency and also in terms of maintaining an even temperature in your home.
Here’s why:

• A single stage burner can only be either on or off. When it’s on, it can only expend it’s full power. It works, but it can allow the temperature to drop more before it turns back on.
• A two stage burner is more adaptable. It can go at either its lower or higher speed.
• A variable stage (or modulating) burner adjusts to the exact conditions in your home. It can choose a lower, more efficient stage (where it’s burning less fuel) to maintain an even temperature without having to constantly turn on and off. On days when the temperature drops to extreme cold, it can use its maximum power to keep your home warm.

It’s always more energy efficient to maintain a constant temperature than to let it rise and fall.

Blower Motor

The blower motor in your furnace powers the fan that sends the heat into your ducts and throughout the rest of your home.

As with gas burners, you can get single speed or different levels of variable speed. Variable speed is more efficient because it can use less energy on lower settings, and maintains an even airflow for you.

If you are concerned about air quality and want a humidifier or air filtration system installed, you’ll get much better results with a variable speed motor.
